Job Overview:

Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research Program encourages applications for a Lead Limnology Technician, with expertise in aquatic ecology, for a full-time position at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The primary summer responsibilities of this individual will be to lead ongoing surveys of several alpine lakes and conduct sampling of ongoing experiments in the Green Lakes Valley. During the winter and spring, this individual would split time between summer sample analysis, information management, and winter fieldwork on a variety of LTER projects. Therefore this position will be based at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Sustainability Energy and Environment Community building (SEEC), the Ramaley Biology building on the main campus, the Mountain Research Station near Nederland, and Niwot Ridge.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities Include:

During the summer field season,

  • Lead a field team for limnological surveys of three focal alpine lakes in the Green Lakes Valley between 10,500 and 12,500 ft ASL.

  • Survey and maintain an ongoing mesocosm experiment that is located near the focal laid.

  • Coordinate the logistics for the summer fieldwork, which includes preparing research permits, coordinating and maintaining field equipment and instrumentation, and coordinating personnel that will support the fieldwork.

  • Laboratory work, including sample filtration, chlorophyll-a fluorescence, and zooplankton microscopic analysis.

During the winter, the responsibilities will be divided between winter fieldwork, sample analysis in the laboratory, and information management.

  • Winter field assistance (1-2 days/wk) will be related to a variety of projects such as maintenance of research sites on Niwot Ridge, especially remote environmental sensor instrumentation and associated structures, snow data collection including snow data pits, snow depth, and winter alpine lake sampling and various other hydrologic measurements.

  • Information management will involve working with the Niwot LTER information manager on a number of data processing tasks including data entry, data quality analysis and control, metadata preparation and data archiving on all limnological data (i.e. Zooplankton community composition and traits; Water quality (from weekly survey profile data); Water chemistry from lake sample collection; Buoy measurements of water quality in GL4; Mesocosm data).

Due to interest, this position application will likely close by May 11th.
