Winter Field Technician, part-time (20 hours per week)
Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research Program
The Niwot Ridge LTER is looking for a part-time winter field technician to assist the field staff with a number of climate, snow and surface water sampling duties including; maintenance of remote research sites on Niwot Ridge, especially remote environmental sensor instrumentation and associated structures, and remote data acquisition infrastructure, snow data collection including snow data pits, snow depth and winter alpine lake sampling, and additional activities such as basic snowmobile and snow cat maintenance, and initial data entry and data processing for climate, snow and water data. The position requires the ability to program and wire data loggers, as well as maintain remote solar powered climate stations. Winter months involve weekly travel over long distances by snowmobile or skis to remote locations in adverse conditions (whiteouts, extreme cold, high winds). Strong winter wilderness skills are needed, including backcountry skiing, avalanche awareness, and wilderness first aid.
A degree or coursework in an environmental science or other related field is desired, as is a demonstrated ability to self-motivate, problem solve, and remain organized amidst a variety of tasks and changing priorities. The right candidate will have a demonstrated ability to stay focused and detail oriented through tedious or repetitive work in difficult weather conditions. A current Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Avalanche 1 certification are all required, though training may be available for the right candidate. Proficiency with Microsoft Xcel is required, and some knowledge of R or Matlab is desired as well.
The part-time field technician must be available to work on Tuesdays and Thursdays from approximately 7:30 am to 5:30pm (times somewhat flexible). This position is based at the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station, north of Nederland, CO at 818 County Road 116, and runs from November 12th through June 1st of 2020 (start date flexible). Some work over the winter holiday seasons may be required. Compensation is $17 to $20 per hour depending on experience.
