Congrats to Airy for Receiving the INSTAAR Graduate Student Community Building Award
Airy has taken a leadership role in many extra-curricular activities focused on bringing science to under-served audiences. Being from Mexico and speaking English as a second language, she has acted on every opportunity to serve as an ambassador to Spanish-speaking students and others who can benefit from seeing her as a scientist. Airy has participated in numerous outreach activities from securing grants to working with school aged children. Some examples of the outreach activities she has participated in include acting as the primary mentor for two summer students in the Research Experience for Community College Students program during 2020 and 2021, and helping train and analyze data from over 150 community scientists collecting data on American pika habitat occupancy throughout the Front Range, in collaboration with the Denver Zoo and Rocky Mountain Wild. These varied activities clearly represent Airy's dedication to translating her knowledge into experiences that elevate community awareness and our collective ability to address ecological problems through science for all.
