Annual Anomalies in Aboveground Biomass

The figure visualized below shows annual deviation in aboveground biomass from the long-term mean in an alpine dry meadow on Niwot Ridge. Aboveground biomass is measured as net primary production (NPP) and averaged across all vegetation types. Positive values, in green, indicate more biomass than average while negative values, in brown, indicate less biomass than average.

Field Site:

The aboveground biomass data visualized on this page is collected in an alpine dry meadow on the Saddle of Niwot Ridge (Figs. 1, 2).

Figure 2: The Saddle on Niwot Ridge. The Niwot Ridge saddle is located 5.6 km from the Continental Divide. The area is located along a ridge-top, but in a shallow saddle between the east and west knolls. There is a 10,000 sq ft tundra laboratory on the south side of the saddle, which serves as a staging area for research in all weather conditions

 
 

Data Collection:

Researchers harvest aboveground biomass from 20 x 50 cm (0.1 m^2) quadrats placed outside of 88 permanent vegetation plots at the Saddle research site (Fig. 3). Scissors or razor blades are used to clip the current year’s growth of vascular plants, and harvested material is placed into paper bags (Fig. 4). Quadrats are marked with a whisker to ensure that the same location is not sampled the following year (Fig. 5). Following collection, aboveground biomass is taken to the lab, dried, and weighed.
